Rent, the 1996 Tony and Pulitzer Prize award-winning musical written by Jonathan Larson (who died after the final dress rehearsal in New York) and directed by Michael Greif, had its Canadian premiere in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on November 25, 1997. Produced by David and Ed Mirvish and the original New York producers Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum, Allan S. Gordon and the New York Theatre Workshop, Rent is Larson's ode to AIDS, love, and homelessness.
Based on Puccini's La Boheme.
After the Royal Alex the show toured to Ottawa and Vancouver.
